I had the amazing opportunity to swap out some work recently! As a photographer, its so hard to find another photographer to take your photos. Partly because you become so critical of your own family photos, partly because you know who the absolute best photographers are (and if you're like me, don't have that kind of money in your budget), but also because photography can tend to be a fiercely competitive business.

I found a gem though. Who isn't afraid of competition, and was totally willing to swap out sessions for free! I took pictures of Tiffany and her girls, and she took pictures of me and my family. How perfect is that! If you haven't checked her out, her name is Tiffany Morris, and she owns Tiffany Morris Photography in Bentonville, AR. She is awesome, fun to hang out with, and takes some amazing photos. (I'll post some of our family photos she took tomorrow!) And best of all, we both share the point of view that we are not each other's competition. Its so nice to be able to share photography tips and tricks with each other.

Honestly, I have this point of view on my competition. We are all there to do the same thing. Yes, we might share a customer base. Yes, they might "steal" my business. But my thinking is that if another photographer "steals" one of my customers, then I need to step it up. I don't want my customers settling for so-so images. I want them to be blown away! So if another local photographer comes to me with a question, be it about technical things, or even business strategy, I help them out! Because a little competition makes me better at what I do. It keeps me on my toes, and keeps me creative. Without competition, we would all be settling for photos from those mall department store studios.

But competition is not what this post is all about. I wanted to show off the gorgeous images I captured of Tiffany and her girls. Aren't they precious?!

I finally did it! I dove in head first and Shot my FIRST WEDDING!

And it wasn't as scary, stressful, or horrible as I thought it would be. In fact, it was really fun! I loved the laid back feel of Richie and Courtney's Wedding. It took place at the Lake Wedington Lodge, which was a spectacular venue for a fall wedding. The leaves were turning, the air was a little crisp, and the water was gorgeous! The lodge was super cozy too!

There will be more images to come later, but for now, I'll leave you with a few of the Details of this intimate fall wedding.

Courtney and Richie chose a classic color scheme of Black, White, and Red. Here's a shot of the mantle above the fireplace:

The "Guestbook" was the mat around their engagement photo.

This Garter with the vintage crystal Broach was the Bride's Something Borrowed, Something Old, and Something Blue, all rolled into one! (Her dress was new!)

Northwest Arkansas Family Photographer--Decisions, Decisions

Recently someone asked me, "What is the most common question you get from your clients about sessions?" My answer was simple, and honest. The most frequent question is...drumroll please....

"What should we wear?"

NEVER FEAR, WONDER WOMAN IS, wait, that's something else entirely! But I do have the answer!

Wear something that makes you feel comfortable and gorgeous! Color is in, as well as pattern. Gone are the days of everyone wearing jeans and white polo shirts or everyone in Khaki pants with Red shirts (this isn't Target people!). And although matching Black shirts keep things cohesive, they can also be a little boring.

My suggestion is this--Start with a basic bottom or color, something neutral, and then add pops of coordinating color from there. For instance, I am planning on having photos done of my family in a few weeks. What are we wearing you might ask? Well, I'll tell you!

We are all wearing medium to dark wash jeans, and black shoes. From there, we're adding our pops of color. My husband is wearing a Black and White Plaid Button Front Oxford Shirt. I am wearing a Crimson Red V-Neck T with a Gray Sweater Cardigan, and a Black and White Necklace. Parker is wearing a Button Front Oxford Shirt with a Black, Crimson, and White Plaid. And last, but certainly not least, Elliot is wearing a Crimson Red Embellished T-Shirt with a Black and White Herringbone Jacket, and a Crimson Red Flower in her hair.

See what we did there? We started with a few Basics. Jeans, Greys, Blacks, and Whites. Then we added our pop of color, Crimson. You could really use a lot of colors with those basics. Think about how cute Mustard Yellow or Turquoise would look with them!

Or you can just go wild with color Coordination. Here's a great example of a coordinating Family:

Notice how they mixed a combination of Solids, Stripes and Plaids in coordinating colors? And they have a color POP with the Reds and Pinks. Their outfits were perfect for a cool fall day. Nobody is wearing a too-tight, scratchy dress or a suit, and nobody matches perfectly. Everyone just blends together to form a cohesive look!

For those of you who are color challenged, or just need another opinion, just give me a call or shoot me an e-mail. Take a quick photo of a few possible outfits for each family member, and send it my way. I'll be happy to give my honest opinion, and help you pick the perfect outfit!

This little girl sure is Lucky!

She got a Baby Sister, and a Baby Cousin, two weeks apart!

But that doesn't mean any of them were particularly happy about it!

But isn't that how life is sometimes? Sometimes the images that I think people will want to see just for a laugh (like the one above of all three girls crying) are the ones they love the most. The image above shows how hectic and overwhelming 3 kids under the age of 3 can be. But I'm guessing they wouldn't have it any other way. This was one of the prints they ordered. Because they wanted to remember how the kids were, not how they looked when they acted perfect and smiled for the camera. I think sometimes we forget that kids are not perfect. They don't always smile. Heck, they don't always grin. Getting pictures of my kids smiling is like trying to find flying monkeys.

But photography to me isn't just about smiles, and perfect hair, and the perfect outfit. This image isn't perfect. Nobody is really looking at the camera. Mom is almost choking little "Tommy". Little "Tommy" has one eye closed. Mom's eyes are closed, and Dad forgot to take off the sunglasses. The dogs are insane. But this is them!

For me, photography is all about capturing life as it happens. And when I manage to capture a funny, sad, real-life moment, that's what makes me smile!

They're BACK!!!

You've been waiting for it all year! Holiday Mini Sessions are BACK! This year, I'll be offering a very limited (10 total) Holiday Mini Sessions. These Sessions are for those brave souls who think they can get their family to sit still (or really just be themselves) for 30-45 minutes. (Regular sessions run 1-2 hours.)

The Mini Session usually produces 15-20 proofs, and the cost is $50. You choose the location, and the fun starts there! All mini sessions must be scheduled before November 21st, and prints must be ordered by December 9th to ensure Christmas Delivery.

Bloggers Guilt!

I've created the cardinal sin of blogging. I've been so busy with life and work and having fun with my kids that its been almost a year since I last blogged! So I'm going to challenge myself to post at least twice a month until the end of the year, and then hopefully once a week (or more often) starting in 2012.

So here's the first post in my challenge. This one is of a recent family session that blew even my socks off. The mom and dad here are so in love, and so stinking beautiful. And their son was a blast! He was willing to smile and play and do everything asked of him. (Which made for a super easy shoot, with over 600 images for me to sort through!) Here are a few of my favorites!

Naughty List!

But in reality, I know that you don't always have the time or money to schedule a full blown professional session. So here it is. Seniors Everywhere!

For me as a photographer, Seniors Shoots are one of my absolute favorites! The sessions are always tons of fun, and great images are always made. This session was a little adventurous, (Snakes were involved, but nobody got bit thank goodness!) but it was no exception to the fun rule! "S" and I laughed and laughed--and I was a little in awe of her natural beauty too!

A Different View

I wanted to go with a "Different View" in this post. I'm always posting images of my clients, but never any of my family. I wanted to post a few of our Christmas celebration at my Grandparent's house. We had a ton of fun, and ate until we almost burst, but it was definitely a special Christmas. The two pictures below are of my Grandparents. My Grandmother was diagnosed with Breast Cancer less than 6 months ago and is currently undergoing Chemotherapy treatments, and my grandfather has suffered multiple heart attacks and strokes over the past 10 years. Although their health is waning, they are still the full-of-life, wonderful, loving Grandparents that I have always known. And to me, they are still a cute couple!

Family Time!

Last fall I had the honor of photographing this amazing family. I have to say that Mom and Dad are doing a great job. All 4 kids were a joy to work with, and VERY well behaved! Plus, the entire family is cute as a button, which definitely made my job easy! I just recently noticed that I hadn't posted their session on the blog, and I thought that they were very deserving of a spot. So, here it is! What a Fun Family!

Hi everyone. I wanted to post this session with a little info first. This is little "N"! She is a wonderful, adorable, and beautiful little girl, who is now in Remission from Neuroblastoma. As a mother, it is hard to imagine any child going through what "N" has been through, but she proved to me that she is one tough Cookie! And a wee bit devious and sneaky at that! She truly was a testament as to how resilient and full of life children are, and a reminder that Cancer can rear it's ugly head anywhere. Daily, I thank God that my child is healthy, and I hope that for the rest of little "N's" life, her parents can do the same.

Wow, its the perfect time of year for Senior Portraits. Well, for that matter, its the perfect time of year for any portraits! The weather was AMAZING on Saturday when I got the chance to take these of "L". And boy was she willing to go crazy and do all of the insane things I asked her to do. Hey, you've gotta be a little crazy to get awesome shots like these! (And nobody said I was sane!)

This shoot had more of an Urban feel than most, because, well, Urban is in! We are currently booked through the month of September except for 1 weekday evening slot. So hurry and book your custom session ASAP to take advantange of this awesome weather--and a little bit of my craziness!

Yesterday, I had the joy of photographing my gorgeous neighbor, her handsome husband, and their bump! They are expecting their little bundle in 5 short weeks. Can you believe how amazing she looks? They're gonna make some great parents! It was a cloudy day, and it sprinkled about half the time, but we were still able to get some amazing shots! If only I looked that good when I was pregnant!

It's crazy! Summer is coming to an end, and our September is already almost FULL! We have truly been blessed with the amount of interest and business we have been getting this fall. It's time for Senior Pictures, along with fall family photos as well. Before we know it, October and November will be here, and Christmas picture time will have come and gone!

It may just be me, but I get giddy this time of year. I love the feel the crisp air as fall rolls in. So here's a list of my favorite fall things: The first frost. Apples. Well, last weekend was a big weekend. We had a shoot on Friday of Little "J", and his gorgeous big sister! Mom even got in on the action! I know she's anxious to see what adorable images that her beutiful kids made, so here's a sneak peek! Aren't they just precious!

Saturday was our shoot for the winner of our Cutest Kids Contest. Jessica was such a doll, and loved to strike a pose! We had so much fun with her, even if it was 95 degrees outside! We'll get those images up ASAP, you don't want to miss them!

Announcing Urban Expectations and Little Wonders!

Urban Expectations is a session designed just for the Mother-to-Be, but with attitude! Sessions take place in Downtown Fayetteville (Dickson Street) and show the trendy side of the expecting mother. Sessions should be scheduled between the 28th and 34th week of pregnancy (to catch that beautiful bump!) and typically yield 20-30 beautifully edited proofs. Best of all, Dad and siblings are welcome to join in!
Little Wonders is a series of sessions to capture your newborn's first year of life. There are 5-- count them--5 total sessions. Sessions take place inside your home, or a location of your choice, that take place at the newborn (birth to 3 weeks) stage, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, and 12 months. Plus, as an added bonus, you get to choose a 5x7 of your choice from each session to be framed in a custom collage frame! I recently had the opportunity to photograph this beautiful mother to be and her daughter. She definitely had that "Glow" about her, and was overjoyed to be carrying her second child, and big sister "A" was pretty excited too! I even managed to sneak a few of little "A" alone! Well, Autumn is definitely among us, and the leaves are starting to fall! (FINALLY!) I really think that Fall is my favorite time of year. Summer is here in full swing, and its time for senior portraits! There are so many places here in downtown Fayetteville to get creative with Seniors and their unique personalities! I absolutely love photographing teens and getting to know them. They are always so full of optimism and life. I had an amazing time with "R" last week. Isn't she just a vision of energy and spunk?
